Even small victories must be celebrated in these times when so much seems insurmountable.  Last Tuesday, Greeley saw a large turnout for a special election.  A small group of dedicated individuals went up against a juggernaut of power, influence and money and won!  This was an issue that all sides of the political spectrum actually found common ground.  This commonality involved not letting big money, and government usurp the will of the people.  Even on the most local level, when big money invades government, corruption is inevitable to some degree.  With grass roots help, even the most daunting issues and individuals can be stopped.

This is encouraging because we are beginning to see this wave of David and Goliath struggles being played out all over the country, and the David side is winning. Democrats flipped legislative seats in Georgia, Iowa, Mississippi and Texas in districts that have traditionally favored Republicans by double-digit margins.  It is happening all over America. People are growing tired of the minority rich and powerful, undermining the Constitution and imposing their will on the rest of us.  This is an issue that all voters have concerns about and a way we can bring more people into the blue tent.  Heather Cox Richardson wrote about something similar recently.  She said, “George Washington warned us about the possibility of cunning, ambitious and unprincipled men rising to power. But he also encouraged us – all Americans—to unite in a common cause to move this nation forward.  That is our charge once more. And that is what we are seeing across the country.”

It is not going to be easy, but few worthwhile things in life are easy.  There will be bullies, and intimidation along the way.  Even I had someone try and intimidate me when I commented on-line about why Cascadia was a bad idea.  They said, “You are a moron and your leftist, feminist views should be kept to yourself and that you should let the big guys handle the growth in West Greeley.”  I responded by posting the final election results for the evening.  He withdrew his comment.

All political change has begun with grassroots movement.  Next week, seize the opportunity to get started with grassroots efforts by participating in caucus and assembly.

America’s future depends on the actions of even the most unassuming citizen.  We need your voice, we need your help to stand up and make our country, our democracy strong.  Can we count on you?
