You may remember from elementary school what the American flag colors mean. Red stands for valor, or courage, white stands for purity, innocence and peace. Blue stands for justice and perseverance. I think it is interesting that the colors that have been adopted by the two political parties perhaps echo those of the flag. Republicans have adopted the color red, reflecting courage and valor, often equated with military or defense and the remembering of fallen soldiers. Blue, the color adopted by Dems, is associated with justice and perseverance. Justice and perseverance reflect the fights for rights and the pursuit of equality. This is a fair assessment of what the two parties, in a nutshell, are most interested in promoting.
This, at the 250th birthday of our nation, is a good time to reflect on the founding documents of our forefathers. In the preamble of the Constitution, it says …In order to form a more perfect union; establish justice… Justice is the first item mentioned in the preamble. Justice is paramount. This also reminds me of a favorite bible verse, Micah 6:8, He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.” Here again, justice is first, stressing to act justly. Then as now, this means to live in accordance with what is right and fair, guided by moral principles. It would also include fairness in the courts, protection of the vulnerable, and opposition to oppression. It is not just about following laws, but about embodying justice in daily life and in societal structures. (verse, what is required of you o mortal…act justly – Search) I can think of no better description of what embracing being a Democrat truly embodies.
On the Fourth of July, come celebrate with us and help us demonstrate what it is to be a proud American and a proud Weld Democrat. I am really tired of Republicans claiming that the flag and its colors are only for them. Join us in the Greeley Independence Day parade and help us uphold justice, and the rights of all Americans. You can help us decorate the float in the parade or march with us and hold a banner or ride along. We need as many volunteers as possible to help us get the float ready. If you can help, call the office at (970)351-7047 and leave a message with your contact info. Or go to our website and fill out the volunteer form link. Then after the parade, please join us for the Annual Weld County Dems Fourth of July Picnic. This is at the home of Don Perl. (This is where the event was last year). If you don’t know the address, you can get it by calling the office at (970) 351-7047 or send an email to wd.centralcomm@gmail.com, to RSVP. (This will help us get an idea of how many supplies and drinks we need. ) A-F bring a side dish or salad, G-S bring a main dish like, chicken, ribs, sandwiches, burritos, casserole, etc., or vegetarian dish, and T-Z bring a dessert. We really need volunteers to help with this event too. Thanks to all who have worked to set this event up and to Don Perl for the use of his backyard.
So come celebrate with us, enjoy meeting with like-minded friends and neighbors, meet new friends and meet some of our Democratic candidates that could use your help to get elected. As Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “The arc of the universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” With your help and your willingness to get out the vote, I predict that arc may not be as long as some people think. We can work to bend it a little more toward justice, soon and very soon. Happy Fourth everyone, and I look forward to seeing you at the parade and picnic. Please volunteer to help out. We need you now more than ever.
