“Never underestimate the power of a small group of dedicated individuals to change the world, indeed that is all that ever has.” Margaret Mead.
Soon 2025 will come to a close. Now we enter the season of hope, goodwill and peace. We rejoice to see cracks in the Republican stronghold, a gift generated from the strong election response. The November election strengthened the Democratic stance, sending a message and putting Republican candidates on notice. The damage this administration has done may take a generation to recover from, but the remedy starts now. We have hope. We have a strong resolve that the coming year will be a huge turn-around and that turn starts with you.
Who could have imagined that Marjorie Taylor Greene, would turn against Trump and then resign. That former military leaders would stand up en masse to defend constitutional truths and be threatened with death. Crazy times, and the Republicans are seeing the handwriting on the wall. Greene won’t be the only resignation. This is not just usual politics, but an opportunity. If we continue to put pressure on elected officials, real change will happen.
So, keep it up. Go to protests, send postcards, and call your representatives. Use your consumer power to let co-conspirator corporations and authoritarian leaning companies know that you’re not buying what they are selling. Repost strong Democratic talking points, challenge mis- and disinformation. Get involved with candidates you support. Run for something. We are earnestly seeking candidates for many local races. Get involved and support your local party. In just a few months we will be having caucus and assembly to support candidates and secure delegates as well as sign up precinct leaders, election judges and poll watchers. The election process and Democracy itself cannot function without people getting involved. Mark your calendars now for caucus on March 7th and assembly on March 14th. We must not let any race run unopposed. We have a real chance of flipping both congressional seats to blue. We must keep our Democratic senator and governor seats and turn more Weld house districts blue. It will take all of us, working together, to get out the vote and be the change we need in this country and county.
Voter turn-out is key. The 2024 election showed that more than one third of eligible Weld County voters of all types, did not bother to vote. Data shows that when 40% or less of Democratic voters turn out, you lose. At 60% it is a toss-up but at over 65%, winning is mostly assured. At 70% we would win back congressional seats, and gain a majority, At 80% we would have a super majority to pass legislation on gun reform, reproductive rights, health care, immigration and affordability. Republicans only hold power because we let them hold power. We can and must vote them out. We need your help to get out the vote. We need to reach Unaffiliated and left- leaning Republican voters too, and it won’t take a Christmas miracle to do so, just some interest and hard work. We can do this. The 2025 elections showed that a blue wave is building. We can make it a tsunami.
As we have hope for the future, let us celebrate together with food and fellowship at this festive time of year. We hope to see you at our annual holiday potluck and bake sale this year.
